Foundations of Global Diplomacy

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations (UN), designed to instill a keen knowledge of diplomacy, public speaking and global awareness in youth delegates. Delegates will represent assigned countries or particular stakeholders in council to hold discussion and debate on specific topics, while pushing for their countries’ interests. Delegates will put their negotiation, problem solving and diplomatic skills to the test by brainstorming solutions to global challenges with like-minded delegates.

Beyond the "M" in "MUN"

At GYLS, we reinvent MUN to go beyond simulation to driving real-world impact. Instead of a 4-day “talkshop” with unused draft resolutions, our MUN conference will culminate in an unprecedented Youth Declaration, a tangible global policy document that embodies our youth delegates’ aspirations for the future and their innovative ideas to address the most pertinent international issues.

Youth in Global Policymaking

In support of the Youth 2030: The UN Youth Strategy, the youth’s role in The 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, The Pact for the Future and Declaration on Future Generations and the National Youth Council’s (NYC) Singapore Youth Plan, we collaborate with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Singapore Centre, under the strategic guidance of the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and managed by The Global Youth Leadership Development Council (GYLDC), to bring the Youth Declaration to life. Our youth delegates can look forward to pitching their global policy ideas to UN agencies and (international) Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to collectively implement and create social impact within and beyond Singapore, where youth participation in policymaking is at stake.

Bridging Youth to Policy

The Youth Public-Foreign Policy Pipeline Programme (YPFPPP) lies at the heart of GYLS’ mission to bridge youths with Industry-Academia-Government for them to better understand the intricacies of Singapore's unique policymaking methodology. Beyond the government, industries and academia enhance the state's expertise and inform better policy decisions.

Local Roots, Global Reach

In line with our motto of "Local to Global", Singapore's national identity and social compact shaped by public policies translate to our foreign policy abroad. By fostering such civic dialogues around Singapore's policies, a better appreciation of our public-foreign policy amongst youths strengthens our global diplomacy efforts.

Redefining Public Service

While this programme sheds light on the realities of Singapore's policymaking model to inspire a youth pipeline for our foreign service, it critically seeks to redefine the scope of public service. While aspiring youth policymakers are foremost public servants of Singapore, they are simultaneously Youth Ambassadors and Global Citizens within the larger international community that are contributing towards the Global Goals to achieve sustainability for all.

Direct Engagement with Diplomats

Are you a passionate youth interested in public-foreign policy, international affairs and public service? As part of the National Youth Council’s Singapore Youth Plan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and GYLS are pleased to launch this inaugural programme where youths will be enabled to have direct engagements with Foreign Service Officers as their mentors, contextualise and share how and why Singapore’s diplomacy and geopolitical developments matter for Singaporeans and youths, and propose policies to shape our foreign policies and ensure meaningful youth participation in them.

Foreign Policy Insights

From gaining a historical perspective of how Singapore’s diplomacy has evolved but remains rooted in principles to ideating how we should remain at the forefront of technological and sustainability innovations, youths will be involved in thematic youth-led research and media publications to share their #YouthPerspective on our foreign policy.

Highlighting Global Issues

The United Nations (UN) International Days are annual observances that highlight specific issues or themes. Each year, a focus is selected to encourage global participation through events, campaigns, and policy discussions.

Global Calls to Action

As GYLS positions ourselves to contribute constructively and meaningfully within and to the UN ecosystem, we believe in celebrating various International Days to enhance awareness among youths of global causes beyond their community, that they as Global Youth Citizens are part of and have an integral role to play. From the Nelson Mandela International Day to the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, our commemorative engagements serve as global calls to action to realise the noble causes that these International Days represent.

Accessible Diplomacy Education

Diplomacy Workshops are central to GYLS’ public education efforts and mission to democratise and ensure that youth diplomacy remains inclusive and accessible to all youths within Singapore and beyond. Beyond an introduction to Model United Nations (MUN), we expose youths to the intricacies of International Relations and Politics that bridges theory with real-world diplomatic practice. As geopolitics disproportionately affect youths, we believe in empowering them with the nuanced understanding and diplomatic skills required to navigate an increasingly volatile and ambiguous future.
